False fire alarm clears movie theater

About 800 patrons were evacuated from a south Lawrence movie theater Friday evening because of what turned out to be a false fire alarm.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical responded to a call about 5:30 p.m. at South Wind 12 Theatres, 3433 Iowa, where a fire alarm was sounding.

When firefighters arrived, the building already had been evacuated, a department spokesman said.

Jon Ratzlaff, general manager at the theater, said about 800 people waited outside for approximately half an hour as firefighters cleared the scene and theater personnel got films up and running again.

The delay pushed back start times on a few of the longer movies scheduled later in the evening, Ratzlaff said.
