Hammer used as weapon in fight; one arrested
A Kansas City, Mo., man is being held on a probable cause warrant in a hammer-beating incident that put a Lawrence man in the hospital.
Jimmie L. Bowser, 27, was arrested by Lawrence Police and booked Monday into the Douglas County Jail.
Police were investigating a Monday morning incident in which a 41-year-old Lawrence man was attacked with a hammer outside Rockledge Apartments, 711 Rockledge Road.
Tuesday, Douglas County Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittel ruled that Bowser could be held on probable cause of aggravated battery. She set a court date for 3 p.m. Tuesday and ordered Bowser held on $30,000 bond. The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office has until that time to decide whether charges will be filed.
Shortly before 10 a.m. Monday, police found a man in the Rockledge Apartments parking lot with head wounds. He was taken by air ambulance to a Kansas City-area hospital, where he remained in serious condition Tuesday, a hospital spokesman said. The hospital is not being identified because of concerns for the man’s safety.
Bowser was found at Trailridge Apartments, 2500 W. Sixth St. He also had a head wound suffered in a fight with the beating victim, police said. He was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, treated and released. Police took him in for questioning.
The fight stemmed from an argument, police Sgt. Mike Pattrick said, though it was unclear what the subject of dispute was.
The beating incident was not connected with Friday night’s robbery at the nearby Westminster Inn, 2525 W. Sixth St., Pattrick said.
While investigating that incident, police searched an apartment at the Rockledge complex and recovered money taken in the robbery. No arrests have been made in that case.
Bowser is also wanted in Barton County for probation violation on a burglary conviction, authorities there said.
