Slain elderly couple died of gunshot wounds

The two elderly people whose bodies were found in their east Lawrence home Thursday died of gunshot wounds suffered when they interrupted a burglary in progress, Lawrence Police Chief Ron Olin said Monday.

During a news conference, Olin described the murders as taking place during “a daylight burglary.”

The chief would not provide other information on the shootings, including how many times they were shot, where they were shot or the type of gun used.

Pete Wallace and Wyona Chandlee’s bodies were found late Thursday afternoon on the floor of their home at 1530 Learnard Ave., by a friend and Chandlee’s stepson.

The double homicide was the city’s first multiple slaying in almost a decade. Autopsies were performed Friday. Information about how the people were killed was released for the first time Monday morning.

Olin said police returned the crime scene house to the family late Sunday after four days of investigating at the house. They still have 28 officers working on the case, he said.

Olin said investigators have no suspect information. He didn’t know if it was one person or more than one person. He said since they started they have checked more than 100 leads.
