Edit the pledge

To the editor:

I don’t care how people in the U.S. choose to be religious. That is their choice. It doesn’t matter if 99.9 percent make that choice. If I do not want to be and don’t want my children to be; that is my choice. I do care if religion is taught in the public schools because I believe in the separation of church and state.

I also do not believe that just because the words “under God” were not there when the Pledge of Allegiance was written or because they were added during the height of “McCarthyism” should have anything to do with decisions that we make today. Hopefully we are more enlightened now and see that those words do not belong in a patriotic pledge.
