Student dies in dorm after giving birth

A college student died after giving birth in a dormitory bathroom as other students came and went, telling those who asked that she was OK, school officials said Wednesday.

The full-term baby was in critical condition.

Karen Marie Hubbard, 19, was not breathing when a resident assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire found her Tuesday night in a bathroom stall, said Charles Major, director of housing. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Paramedics found the baby girl when they removed Hubbard from the stall. The newborn weighed between 5 pounds and 7 pounds, Major said.

Major said Hubbard’s roommate, a friend from high school, noticed Hubbard had gained some weight but did not know Hubbard was pregnant. The roommate said Hubbard may not have known herself, according to Major.

Dog put to death in fatal mauling case

The second of two dogs that mauled a woman to death outside her apartment door last year was destroyed Wednesday.

The dog, Hera, had been in city custody for the past year. Bane, the other Presa Canario dog primarily responsible for the mauling, was put to death immediately after the attack on Diane Whipple.

A city hearing officer determined Hera was dangerous and ordered her destroyed a year ago. But an animal rights lawyer challenged the move, with support from the couple who kept the dogs, Robert Noel and Marjorie Knoller.

Lower courts ruled in favor of the city, and the state Supreme Court two weeks ago refused to hear the case.

Jury selection in the trial of Noel and Knoller resumes next week in Los Angeles. Both face charges of involuntary manslaughter, and Knoller faces second-degree murder charges in the death of their neighbor.

Inmate who killed wife, stepson executed

A man who killed his wife and stepson by repeatedly stabbing them in 1992 was executed by injection Wednesday night.

“I just want to let everyone know this here is a tragedy,” Windell Broussard, 41, told those witnessing his execution in Huntsville. “What happened to Dianna, what happened to Corey, what’s happening to me, it’s a tragedy.”

Broussard fatally stabbed his wife, Dianna, 28, and her 10-year-old son, Corey Harris, at their home in Port Arthur. Her daughter, Toccara Harris, 9, was seriously wounded.

The girl identified Broussard as the knife-wielding intruder who came into their home as they slept.

Broussard, in an interview last week, acknowledged he and his wife were having marital problems and that he was living elsewhere but denied any involvement in the slayings.

“I’ve always, from the very beginning, said I didn’t do it,” he said. “Why feel sorry for something you didn’t do?”

Students, adults run over by car

A driver who may have stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake struck a group of students being picked up by their parents after school Wednesday, authorities said.

Three adults and fifteen students were injured, at least three of them seriously, according to hospitals. The other victims’ injuries ranged from leg fractures to bumps and bruises, Fire Department spokesman Steve Ruda said.

The kindergarten- through eighth-grade students were waiting for their parents in a parking lot between the school and a church.

Witnesses said the car suddenly accelerated. Ruda said the driver was there to pick up a grandchild.
