Cut KU women?

To the editor:

You must be kidding. To the executive director of the KU Courtsiders, I’ve never even heard of this group. You obviously don’t have a very big following if Kansas University women’s basketball can’t even draw 1,000 people. Yet you ask Mr. Powell what he has to show for his career when it doesn’t even matter. He doesn’t work in the public spotlight as Coach Marion Washington does.

When Bohl came to KU, he was all about making money and turning the entire athletics department around. I’m not very good at math, but I am pretty confident it costs more money to open Allen Fieldhouse and operate the facility than what they are making for a women’s basketball game. How can you justify paying Coach Washington that kind of salary with all the fringe benefits? Coach Roy Williams might even be overpaid, but at least they make money for the university in men’s basketball.

Sure Coach Washington has done well in Big 8/Big 12 play, but how has she done in the “big dance”? Maybe Kansas State University wasn’t a good model for Mr. Powell, but what about Iowa State or Texas Tech?

Heaven forbid if anyone says anything bad about KU basketball and its coaches around here, but I got a quick solution for Bohl. Cut women’s basketball altogether just like they did with a few other sports. With their “strong desire for Washington to continue her work at KU,” move her to some administrative position and the courtsiders should be happy. Mr. Powell should be happy Washington no longer coaches, and Bohl should be happy to save some money.
