Senate map wins House’s approval

? The House kept a promise Tuesday, quickly approving a Senate redistricting map without changes and sending it to Gov. Bill Graves.

By tradition, each chamber of the Legislature approves the other’s redistricting plan without amendment. Tuesday’s House vote on the Senate’s bill revising the boundaries of its districts was 96-25.

“The House stands tall, and we keep our promises,” said Rep. Doug Mays, R-Topeka, vice chairman of the House Redistricting Committee. “It is time for the Senate to keep its promises.”

A House bill reshaping its 125 districts awaits the endorsement of the Senate Reapportionment Committee, which has not met since early last week.

The Senate redistricting plan was drafted by a coalition of the chamber’s 10 Democrats and 11 conservative Republicans.

Senate President Dave Kerr, R-Hutchinson, and some other GOP senators want Graves to veto the bill.

Coalition members have said their proposal is fairer to Democrats and rural legislators than a map endorsed by the Senate Reapportionment Committee.
