Historian schedules visit to Lecompton museum

A noted historian will visit Lecompton Monday morning before heading to a speaking engagement at Park University that evening.

James Oliver Horton, the Benjamin Banneker Professor of American Studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., will tour the Territorial Capitol Museum beginning at 10 a.m. Monday. He’ll also visit Constitution Hall and the Democratic Headquarters.

Horton, considered a major African-American historian, has appeared on the American Writer’s Series on C-SPAN and recently assisted in the production of a PBS video and television program on abolitionist John Brown.

Horton will present “The Crisis of American Democracy: John Brown and the Struggle for African-American Freedom” from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Park University, Parkville, Mo. The free presentation, part of the university’s Black History Month programming, will be open to the public.

Police seek robbery suspect

Lawrence Police late Saturday were searching for a suspect in an ATM robbery.
