Racetrack probe finds thousands missing

? An investigation has found “many thousands of dollars” missing from The Woodlands racetrack in Kansas City, Kan., the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission was told Friday.

Tracy Diel, the commission’s interim executive director, told the commission at least one track employee was involved in the money’s disappearance.

“That individual was getting cash to provide goods and services at The Woodlands, but was not procuring those goods and services, although he said he was,” said Diel, who declined to name the person.

The contracts for the goods and services were never filed with the commission, which is a violation of regulations, Diel said in an interview with Mid-America News Network after the meeting.

In January, Diane Krug, an assistant general manager and controller at the track, was fired, and general manager August J. Masciotra was placed on administrative leave.

Another assistant general manager, Allan P. Meyers, resigned in January. Diel indicated that Meyers was not involved with the missing money.

The track has hired an accountant to review its books.

“I’m not sure how much is missing, but I know it’s many thousands of dollars,” Diel said.

Diel said that the missing money did not affect wagers from the public or simulcast contracts at the pari-mutuel track.

No charges have been filed and no administrative action has been taken, he said.

“We are pretty confident we know the individual who’s involved,” Diel said. “We need to determine if more people were involved, and where the money went.”
