Winter officially begins Sunday
Winter officially comes to Lawrence early Sunday morning. But don’t pull out your snow shovel, sled and heavy arctic coat, scarf and gloves just yet.
“A jacket is about all you will need for the first day of winter,” said Matt Makens, 6News meteorologist.
The 2002-2003 Winter season begins officially at 1:14 a.m. Sunday.
“We will start off Sunday morning in the teens, but we’ll end up about 40 degrees,” Makens said. “There will be just a couple of clouds on Sunday.”
But a little later in the week, there’s a possibility of snow, he said.
“6News meteorologists are tracking a possible winter storm into Christmas eve and into Christmas morning,” Makens said.” Right now, it looks like it will miss us to the south, but being five days away, you can’t rule it out. So we’ll keep an eye on it.”
Temperatures will be a little cooler on the last days of autumn, he said.
“For the rest of today, we’ll top out in the low 50s, and it will be a little breezy with sunny skies,” Makens said. “Friday night, we’ll get down to 23 degrees, with a little touch of a breeze in there as well.”
On Saturday, it will be mostly cloudy, dry and 42.
