Standing firm

To the editor:

I’m writing to commend Jack Davidson for standing by the people who voted for him. Far from “hanging on to platitudes,” Mr. Davidson is faithfully and thoughtfully representing their position. Mick Lowe’s email, addressed to Mr. Davidson but sent to all members of the school board and Supt. Weseman, and excerpted in Wednesday’s Journal-World, distorts Mr. Davidson’s views and seeks to recast the whole discussion.

It is simplistic and inaccurate to view this issue as a contest between forward-thinkers and a “no-growth, no-tax-at-any-cost element.” What many people find disturbing is the way the administration and their consultants have presented the plan as a take-it-or-leave-it whole. Jack Davidson has clearly stated that he supports rebuilding South Junior High and expanding the alternative high school. What he opposes is the closing of schools and the high overall cost of the proposed bond issue. Standing firm and resisting pressure to get on the bond-issue bandwagon seems like “heavy-lifting” to me.

While Mr. Lowe may have sent the e-mail as his own opinion, it does seem to represent the basic viewpoint of the administration, as seen at public meetings.
