Slight chance of snow later this week

If your Christmas wish list includes snow, you’ll have to keep dreaming, says Matt Makens, 6News meteorologist.

“A chance for a white Christmas is not the greatest,” Makens said Monday morning.

But there is a possibility of seeing a little of the white stuff later in the week.

“We could see a few flakes Thursday and Friday. That’s pretty questionable though,” Makens said. Although this week looks fairly dry, some weather patterns are setting up that might bring a better chance of snow next week, he said.

A white Christmas is fairly unusual in Lawrence. Records show the last time there was a substantial amount of snow on the ground on Dec. 25 was 1987, when 1.5 inches fell that day, he said. Four years earlier, on Dec. 25, 1983, there were 10 inches on the ground, he said.

“If folks do want a white Christmas, go to the East coast. They’ve been getting the brunt of storms we’ve missed out on.”

Monday’s forecast calls for a high of about 45, with an overnight low of 24. Tuesday and Wednesday’s highs will also be in the upper 40s, with overnight lows in the upper 20s.

More clouds, with a very slight chance of flurries, are expected Thursday and Friday, with highs in the 30s and an overnight low in the 20s.
