County to meet with lawmakers

Douglas County commissioners plan to sit down Monday with area representatives in the Kansas Legislature.

Then they’ll decide whether to sue them.

Monday morning, commissioners are scheduled to meet with legislators beginning at 9 a.m. at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass. Topping the agenda will be a discussion of the state’s emaciated financial condition, as legislators prepare to grapple with an estimated $312 million budget deficit for the year’s first six months.

Of particular concern is Gov. Bill Graves’ decision to withhold $48 million in transfer funds from city and county governments. That’s left county officials expecting to lose $1.8 million for the calendar year, cutting deeply into services.

After the discussion, commissioners are scheduled to consider joining legal action being mulled by the Kansas Association of Counties and League of Kansas Municipalities.

Also during Monday’s meeting, commissioners are scheduled to discuss parking issues surrounding the county courthouse.
