Parents report disappearance of two Free State sophomores

Two Free State High School sophomores are missing, and the girls’ parents have reported their disappearance to police.

“My daughter has been missing since Tuesday around third period,” said Joy Amon, mother of 15-year-old Serena Amon. “That’s when a few of her friends said they saw her walking hurriedly toward the doors of Free State High School.”

Parents of the other missing student, a 16-year-old, asked that their daughter not be named. They assume the girls are runaways and said they did not want the media to report on the missing girls for fear the reports might cause them to run farther.

Free State Principal Joe Snyder said the older girl had not attended classes all week, but Snyder said Serena Amon was at school half the day Tuesday.

Serena’s mother said she was afraid something happened that day at school that caused her daughter to disappear.

“The mother of the other girl said her daughter called her from the school and said several girls had accosted her daughter and my daughter in the restroom and threatened them with a knife,” Joy Amon said.

Snyder said officials couldn’t substantiate the report.

Officials also report both missing students made contact with family members Wednesday, but neither child would tell their parents where they were.

Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Pattrick said his department had taken two reports on the missing students from both sets of parents.

“At this time, police have determined that the juveniles are missing voluntarily,” Pattrick said. “We are still looking to gain information as to their whereabouts.”
