Injury accident
One of two people injured Wednesday night in a wreck about 10 miles south of Lawrence remained hospitalized Thursday at KU Med. Wesley Berkett, 41, Ottawa, was taken to KU Med, Kansas City, Kan., by Life Star helicopter after the accident occurred about 9 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highways 56 and 59, the Kansas Highway Patrol said. He was in serious condition Thursday, a hospital spokesman said. Berkett was a passenger in a 1993 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Scott O. Moran, 31, Ottawa. Moran was taken by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released. A third passenger, Jeffrey Markely, 38, Ottawa, was not injured. The driver of the other truck, Edgar E. Johnson, 82, and a passenger, Mirian Johnson, 82, both of Ottawa, were not injured. The Highway Patrol said Moran was driving west on U.S. 56 when the truck he was driving collided with a 1984 Ford pickup truck that was southbound on U.S. 59. Moran failed to yield at a stop sign, the Highway Patrol said. No information was available about whether a citation had been issued to Moran.
