Health care agency slates casino night fund-raiser

The folks who run Health Care Access figure they need $20,000 to end the year in the black.

To come up with the money, they’re starting a one-night casino Saturday at the Springhill Suites by Marriott. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

“Everybody who buys a ticket will get $5,000 in chips to play with. There’ll be blackjack, craps and a roulette wheel,” said Nikki Rhea, executive director at Health Care Access, a Lawrence medical clinic that cares for the uninsured.

At the end of the evening, whoever’s won the most money gets a catered dinner for eight from La Tasca restaurant.

Called “A Holiday in Monte Carlo,” the fund-raiser also will feature a gourmet buffet dinner, starting at 7:30 p.m., live music, a silent auction that includes a trip to Hawaii, and a raffle for a $1,800 diamond-and-emerald bracelet.

Available at the door, tickets to “A Holiday in Monte Carlo” are $50.

“All the money that’s raised will go to support clinic operations,” Rhea said.

The clinic at 1920 Moodie Road logs about 3,300 patient visits a year.

Most of the clinic’s services are donated by area doctors and Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
