School spending

To the editor:

Since school enrollment started, I’ve seen articles about how the enrollment has lowered this year, and the schools are worried because it will cut the funding. Although I understand that “money makes the world go round” I must say that I was astounded to see how much the cost of enrollment jumped this year.

Last year, the schools sent home a questionnaire asking if parents would pay for the students to ride the bus, etc. How many parents do you think really said “oh yes please send me another bill!”? If our opinions aren’t going to be considered, then why ask? Furthermore, there is the possibility that parents have chosen to home school their children this year, due to the cost of enrollment. How is a single parent of two kids (especially if they’re older and want to participate in extra programs) going to afford this? It’s ridiculous.

This year, after paying more than twice the amount for enrollment, the school sends home a letter to the parents stating that the school needed a facelift, so they have a landscaper building a waterfall and pond on the school’s property. Although I’m not opposed to the waterfall/pond, I think it is almost criminal to spend all this money they keep saying they don’t have! That is what you call poor financial management. I think the only thing that needs a facelift is our school board.
