Renovations approved for Dunkin Donuts site
Lawrence city commissioners gave the go-ahead Tuesday for plans to tear down and rebuild the 23rd Street Dunkin Donuts, despite a recommendation from planners who said the proposal doesn’t address traffic concerns.
Planners said redevelopment along 23rd Street should reduce the number of driveways along that street; the large number of “access points” along 23rd Street are blamed for poor traffic there. Planners suggested customers could get to the store at 521 W. 23rd St. through the driveways of a nearby shopping center.
But the store’s owners said they needed the access points for supply deliveries and customer service; the new store will have a drive-through window. More than two dozen customers attended Tuesday’s meeting to give support.
Commissioners voted unanimously to approve Dunkin Donuts’ plan.
