Complex increases security

Private patrols planned at site of apartment brawl

Private security patrols have been increased at a Lawrence apartment complex where a crowd of as many as a thousand people Sunday morning brawled among themselves and with police.

“We’re concerned about the incident, and we’re taking it very seriously,” said Ronnie Foye, director of community operations at Jefferson Commons apartment complex, 2511 W. 31st St. “Nightly security patrols have been doubled to try to relieve the concerns of the residents and their parents.”

About 700 people live at Jefferson Commons, which bills itself as a student housing community. Virtually all its residents are students.

From 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. Sunday at the complex, Lawrence Police responding to an alcohol-fueled melee arrested 13 people. Lawrence Police were assisted by officers of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas University Public Safety Department.

Police initially were called to the complex to investigate noise complaints. Officers found a large group of people drinking outside. When officers tried to disperse the crowd, fights broke out among the revelers, and beer cans and cups were thrown at police. A patrol car was damaged.

A resident said Sunday the trouble began in the courtyard area in the center of the complex, and that beer cans and cups were being hurled from apartment balconies.

Foye said she was waiting for copies of police reports and reviewing apartment policies to see if any residents were in violation of Jefferson Commons rules.

Information from police and Douglas County Jail records show the following people were arrested and cited to appear in municipal court primarily for disorderly conduct or trespassing:

Kristine R. Desch, 20, 1301 W. 24th St.; Ryan P. Terry, 21, 1321 Tenn.; David B. Mathews, 19, 2511 W. 31st St.; Daniel L. Sailler, 22, Overland Park; Robert L. Carlton, 20, 1815 Naismith Drive; all KU students.
