Response to rant

To the editor:

Why you continue to publish the atavistic rants of a throwback like Cal Thomas, I can only guess, is to ensure daily letters to the editor like this one.

One cannot even use the term “thinly veiled” to describe Thomas’ xenophobia: It is blatant, as when he complains (in his Friday column) of airlines’ safety films, horror of horrors, explained in SPANISH as well as English. Holy @#$!, what were they thinking that non-native English speakers’ lives were as important as anyone else’s?

Complaining as he does of immigrants’ unwillingness to learn U.S. history and culture, he conveniently forgets that the only reason we own California and adjacent lands previously held by Spanish-speaking Mexico is that we were able to buy them cheap from a corrupt, incompetent dictator of a country in bad economic straits.

But if confronted, I’m sure Thomas would invoke the almighty Invisible Hand of Adam Smith, or Manifest Destiny, or some other theological nonsense to justify and glorify the purchase.

Jesse Truesdale,
