Storm provides much-needed rain

Another late-summer storm whipped through the area overnight Friday, dropping more than a half-inch of rain in parts of Douglas County.

The precipitation came on the heels of another round of showers Friday morning and before that on Tuesday.

George Phillips, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka, said 0.25 inches of rain had fallen at Lawrence Municipal Airport late Friday into early Saturday.

Rainfall reports from weather spotters across the city and county varied:

Randy Tongier recorded 0.35 inches in the Deerfield area.

Kenneth Blair measured 0.32 inches in central Lawrence.

Bruce Stucky recorded 0.24 inches in southeast Lawrence.

In Stull, Dennis Hetrick reported 0.63 inches.

Ryan Young measured 0.8 inches in Baldwin.

The good news for area farmers and those happy that their lawns are starting to green up is that more rain could be on the way today and Monday.

The weather service is forecasting a 30 percent chance for thunderstorms today, a likelihood that will increase to 50 percent by this evening. A chance of thunderstorms continues Monday.

Temperatures should remain mild, with highs in the mid-80s and lows in the upper-60s, the weather service said.
