Democrat retorts

To the editor:

Please allow me to respond to Jean Dill’s letter condemning those of us who did not vote in the Aug. 6 primary. I did not vote in the primary election, but I am neither lazy nor uninformed. In fact, I am enthusiastic about politics at all levels and I took the time to learn about both the issues and the candidates running in the primary. A number of friends and family members who voted asked me for an election overview because they were too busy to do the research themselves.

So, why did I not vote? The answer is simple. I am a registered Democrat and in the area where I live, as in much of Lawrence, there were no contested Democratic primaries.

I am sure that our community has its share of lazy and uninterested people. However, I believe that there are many others like me, Democrats waiting patiently for November for the opportunity to participate in our democracy. Thank you.

Sarah Spray,
