Misconceptions

To the editor:

My wife and I recently moved to Lawrence after having lived in San Jose, Calif., for almost 25 years. After checking other college town communities, we settled in Lawrence for our retirement because of the many amenities we found here.

What was surprising were the misconceptions people in California had about Lawrence picturing it as a sleepy town surrounded by wheat fields. To them, it was a flat land, with no landscapes and nothing to do here. There only comment seemed to be “Lawrence, Kansas? Why in the world would you want to live there?”

Having been here only a couple of weeks, I can honestly say that I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. The landscape is beautiful, the cultural arts are here, and by no means is Lawrence a sleepy town. I think the beauty and joy of Lawrence is complemented only by its unrushed, pleasant residents who take the time to know you and accept you. But I won’t tell the doubters that. They wouldn’t believe me anyway.
