Difficult donation

To the editor:

Last Friday night, as I was watching the 10 p.m. Channel 6 news, I saw a clip about the the Salvation Army shelter at 946 N.H. The clip stated the food pantry was nearly empty and in need of donations. Saturday morning, I took my family to the store and purchased just over $50 worth of food and diapers, and we made our way down to the shelter.

There was no one there and no sign saying when donations were accepted. I called the phone number, which again gave no information about when donations could be dropped off, so I left a message to have someone call me back. Several days have passed, and I have not received a call from anyone at the Salvation Army. (I also tried calling the Pelathe Center, with the same outcome.)

Why is it so difficult to bring food to a shelter or food pantry? I realize maybe they were looking for a cash donation, but I was hoping to teach my children about caring and giving to those less fortunate in our community. If they are really in need of donations, it should be better posted when donations are accepted, and you’d think someone would have called me back!
