Institute progress

To the editor:

Terry Rombeck’s recent story on developments at the Dole Institute was as flattering as it was comprehensive. Under the circumstances, it almost seems churlish to take exception to anything he wrote. But there is one important additional fact that readers should know: While I am indeed the institute’s first permanent director, I am building on an impressive foundation laid down by KU Professor Burdett Loomis, who served as interim director and who advanced the project significantly.

Otherwise the story did an excellent job of communicating my desire one shared, I might add, not only by Sen. Dole but by Chancellor Hemenway to create a facility reflective of, and responsive to, the entire state of Kansas. Moreover, I want the Dole Institute to serve as a showcase for the whole KU community. Which explains our efforts to establish the first satellite uplink on campus, in order to bring the intellectual and athletic riches of KU to a vastly larger audience.
