Volunteers needed to help Senior Services

Agency: Douglas County Senior Services

Address: 745 Vt.

For more than a decade, volunteers with the Douglas County Senior Services have put coupons on products in grocery stores. The coupons serve two purposes: to help consumers save money and to raise money for the senior citizens’ organization.

But the rank and file of volunteers has dwindled.

Mary Boyer, who coordinates the coupon program, said at least four volunteers are needed so the program can be re-established at Lawrence’s Checkers and Food for Less grocery stores.

Volunteers typically work two hours a week, and standing for periods of time is required.

When consumers purchase a product with the attached coupon, Boyer said, they can take the discount off their shopping bill or donate the worth of the discount to the senior services organization.

Last week’s results

The Lawrence Public Library received enough calls after it appeared in last week’s “How You Can Help” to fill out the volunteer list for its Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale.

The Friends organization needed volunteers to open boxes, reshelve books and straighten book stacks.

The book sale, which began Friday, will continue today, Thursday and Saturday at the library, 707 Vt.
