SM East torches Firebirds

FSHS falls to .500

? Free State High’s baseball team fell to Shawnee Mission East, 14-8, on Thursday.

David Arndt and Kyle Unruh both went 2-for-3 for Free State. Unruh had two RBIs and Arndt one for the Firebirds.

“We couldn’t get them stopped,” said Free State coach Mike Hill, whose team fell to 2-2. “We’d get ahead and they’d come back. We weren’t sound defensively. We have to pitch ahead of people and get multiple pitches over for strikes. Until our young staff learns how to do that we’ll have nights like this.

“We swing the bat OK, but we have too many strikeouts in RBI situations. You score eight runs you feel the bare minimum you should be in ballgame, and that wasn’t the case.”

Free State will meet Fayetteville, Ark., today at the Claremore, Okla., baseball festival. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
