A national restructuring may have some local downtown coffee drinkers restructuring their mornings.
Starbucks has closed its store at Seventh and Massachusetts streets as part of a national plan that targeted low performing locations.
The national chain last week said it would undertake a more than $1 billion restructuring, and indicated the plan would involve about 400 store closings.
In a message to company employees, CEO Brian Niccol said the company would close locations “where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance.”
The Lawrence store may have had a couple of strikes against it as it does not have a drive-thru nor is it adjacent to free parking. (Well, the metered spaces are free during certain hours, but not during most daytime hours.)
Starbucks opened its downtown location in December 2001, according to an old Journal-World article. That article noted it was joining six independent coffee houses operating in downtown. More than two decades later, the downtown district remains a hub for independent coffeehouses.
But for those of you who crave a brew from the nation’s largest coffeehouse chain, Starbucks continues to have multiple Lawrence locations. The Starbucks app continues to list nine Lawrence locations, including standalone and smaller in-store stands.
