Kansas basketball jumps to No. 4 in latest AP poll; KU women up 2 spots to 20th

Kansas guard Gradey Dick (4) soars in for a dunk past Indiana forward Race Thompson (25) during the first half on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2022 at Allen Fieldhouse.

After dropping two spots in the Associated Press Top 25 following their trouncing of Missouri a week ago, the Kansas men’s basketball team made up for it by jumping four spots in this week’s poll after pounding Indiana on Saturday.

Kansas, which has won four consecutive games by an average of 27 points per win since dropping its first game of the season to Tennessee on Nov. 25, is now ranked No. 4 in the country, behind Purdue, UConn and Houston.

The Jayhawks are now 10-1 on the season and will close out the early portion of their non-conference slate at 6 p.m. Thursday against Harvard at Allen Fieldhouse. That game will be televised by ESPN2.

Arizona, Virginia, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama and Arkansas round out this week’s Top 10 in the poll that features four Big 12 Conference schools in the Top 25 and four more receiving votes.

Indiana (8-3) dropped four spots to No. 18 after the 84-62 loss to Kansas that the Hoosiers were never in. And Tennessee, which fell to 9-2 with a tough loss at No. 5 Arizona over the weekend, dropped two spots to No. 8 in this week’s poll.

No. 7 Texas (9-1), No. 12 Baylor (7-2) and No. 20 TCU (9-1) are the other Big 12 teams ranked this week. West Virginia is on the brink of being ranked, sitting as the team receiving the second-most votes outside of the Top 25, while Iowa State, Texas Tech and Kansas State are all receiving votes, as well.

In this week’s AP women’s poll the unbeaten Kansas women, who rolled to their 10th win of the season last week broke into the Top 20, moving up two spots from No. 22 last week to No. 20 this week.

KU’s women will play at Nebraska on Wednesday night in their final nonconference test of the 2022-23 season. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. on BTN+ and Brandon Schneider’s team will open Big 12 play on Dec. 31 at Oklahoma State.

The KU men open Big 12 play the same day against OSU at Allen Fieldhouse.
