Slattery turns other cheek

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Jim Slattery turned some heads with a “cheeky” TV ad that shows people going through their daily routine while wearing hospital gowns opened in the back. The ad, titled “Uncovered” is meant to highlight the disparity between the health insurance U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., receives as a member of Congress, and the problems of everyday folks in getting coverage, the Slattery campaign said.”It is our hope that this ad will get people’s attention and generate discussion about the important issues in this campaign- the economy, energy prices, and of course health care,” the Slattery campaign said.Candidates ignore “Political Courage Test” U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda, D-Topeka, and her Republican challenger Lynn Jenkins, disagree on many issues. But one thing they have in common – both of them did not take the “Political Courage Test.” The same is true for U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore, D-Lenexa, and his Republican challenger Nick Jordan. The Political Courage Test is part of an effort by Project Vote Smart to educate voters about candidates. The test covers numerous areas, asking candidates what they will support if elected. But even without the test, you can go to their Web site to find out about more about the candidates through campaign finance data, voting records, special interests’ ratings, and candidate statements.Upcoming forum Another way to learn about the candidates is to attend public forums where they will be speaking. On Monday, Boyda and Jenkins will participate in a forum at the Dole Institute of Politics on Kansas University’s West Campus. The event, sponsored by LJWorld.com, the Lawrence Journal-World, 6News and the Voter Education Coalition, starts at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
