Status report to be given on Capitol project
Architects and construction company officials on Wednesday will give legislative leaders an update on costs to restore and renovate the Capitol. And if tradition continues, the pricetag will go up.The current estimate is $285.6 million, up from the $90 million to $120 million estimate made in 1999-2000.The project’s cost has escalated as new work has been added, such as 118,000 square feet of new office space in the basement, an underground parking garage, and the latest item – repair to the exterior masonry. Construction materials have also increased in excess of the inflation rate. Some legislators have complained about the increased costs, but for the most part legislative leaders – Republican and Democrat – haven’t blinked, and continue to support the project. The Kansas Capitol Restoration Committee meets at 11 a.m. in room 123-South in the Statehouse.
