KDHE to testify on coal-plant permits
Top officials from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment will be on hand Tuesday to brief a legislative panel on the permit application process for the proposal coal-fired electric plants in western Kansas.Sunflower Electric Power Corp. applied in June 2006 for permits to build two 700-megawatt plants near Holcomb.Supporters of the project have gotten nervous because KDHE has yet to make a decision.KDHE officials have maintained the Sunflower proposal requires a lot of technical work and that under state law the agency has until Dec. 1 to make a decision. Even so, KDHE has said it will announce a decision on the permits this month.The meeting of the Electric Generation Review Panel will start at 10 a.m. in room 313-South of the Capitol.
