Superintendent Search: A public event

At last night’s school board meeting, board members voted to move forward in selecting a national search firm to help select a replacement for Superintendent Randy Weseman. The last time a search firm was used to find a superintendent, the district hired Kathleen Williams, whose star-crossed tenure ended after two contentious years. Board members expressed interest in using community-wide focus groups to help select Weseman’s replacement. A cross-section of residents, business owners, educators and district staff would hopefully give the board a good indication of what Lawrencians want in a new superintendent. The school board in the next few weeks will begin sending out requests for proposals to search firms. Monday night, board member Marlene Merrill said it would be key to include in the RFP the qualities the community wants in its new superintendent.”If we don’t have that in mind, then we won’t know if the search company we utilize will be able to meet our needs,” she said. “What qualities does the community want?”So… what do you want? What qualities/experience will Lawrence’s next superintendent have? What is key to the next five, 10 or 20 years in the Lawrence Public Schools?
