Kids just don’t understand
Almost two million freshmen have started college or are just moving in for their first semester/trimester as adults. (The college I went to started in September, so I’m not on top of the whole “school in August” thing.) This group of 2012 includes my little brother, Warren. (Sniff.) He has moved to his dorm at Columbia College in Chicago and is already making friends and playing pingpong. (Nice start to the year.)For those of you NOT born in the past 2 decades, it’s interesting to see the Mindset List. For the past 11 years, Beloit College in Beloit, Wisc., has produced a list of things that the newest co-eds may or may not know. For example, Harry Potter could be their classmate. Pearl Jam has always been a band. And they have never known a U.S. Supreme Court without Clarence Thomas. And they’ve never had to hear Roseanne Barr sing the national anthem.Let’s be thankful for that.I graduated from college just over a year ago, and the lists for 2007 and 2012, while only 5 years apart, are pretty different. My favorite on the ’07 list? “There has always been an association between fried eggs and your brain.”Best. Commercials. Ever.I still can’t make scrambled eggs without thinking about those Saturday morning scare tactics. Is there anything that frustrates you about kids today – like what you think they should know? Or at least learn about? One thing that Warren and I do have in common? We’ll never again have to live without Guitar Hero. Rock on.See the full Mindset List here : [Class of 2012][3]
