KU running out of winnable games?

The way this year’s Kansas football schedule looks, wins are going to be increasingly difficult to come by as the season progresses. The Jayhawks have Rutgers on the road in their non-conference finale this Saturday. Then, they open Big 12 play at Iowa State on Oct. 3.

But after that comes what could very well be No Wins Land: Baylor, Texas Tech, at Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, at Texas, at TCU, West Virginia, Kansas State.

Basically, we’re running out of weeks in which someone might pick KU to win a football game. But one man in our pick ’em group was brave enough to do so this week. Find out who, and get a break from thoughts of what lies ahead for Kansas by thinking about the best concerts you’ve ever seen — thanks to our question of the week.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon said this week an AC/DC concert at Wrigley Field “messed up the infield.” What’s the best or most memorable concert you’ve ever been to?

Last week: 3-3 | Season: 14-4

I can’t think of a concert that stands
clearly above the rest that I’ve been
to, but one of the more memorable
bands that I’ve seen live was the Blue
Man Group. I wasn’t all that excited
for the concert beforehand, but it
ended up being a pretty cool show with
how they incorporated members of the
audience.

Last week: 4-2 | Season: 13-5

Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic in
Luckenbach, Texas in 1999. Asleep at
the Wheel, Pat Green, Ray Wylie
Hubbard, Leon Russell and of course,
Willie Nelson.

Last week: 5-1 | Season: 13-5

Neil Young, Sprint Center, April 30,
2009. His voice and guitar remain forever young. He played “Needle and
the Damage Done,” “Old Man,” “Cinnamon
Girl,” “Down By the River” and
finished with a cover of the Beatles’
“A Day in the Life.” He turns 70 on
Nov. 12. I don’t go to many concerts
but have seen him in five consecutive
decades, the first date being July 5,
1976.

Last week: 5-1 | Season: 13-5

I saw standup comedian Steve Martin
perform, which counts as a concert
because there were 7,000 or so people
there. It was not today’s Steve
Martin, the banjo guy/OK actor guy,
but the back in the day Martin whose
concerts were a happening.

As far as the more traditional
music/concert genre, I’d probably have
to go with Alice Cooper at a sold-out
Chicago Stadium in a close vote over
Billy Joel at at a sold-out Sprint
Center.

Last week: 4-2 | Season: 13-5

U2 at Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium.

Last week: 3-3 | Season: 12-6

I’ve seen Paul McCartney twice (and
loved the ever-living heck out of it
both times) and seen both of John
Lennon’s sons (Julian and Sean) in
Denver, Lawrence and Kansas City. But
the best concert I’ve ever been to was
also my first and it came at Mile High
Stadium in Denver in 1994, when I saw
Pink Floyd from the second-to-top row
of the stadium. My dad, step-mom and
step-sister were on the floor and we
talked after the concert, which was
incredible in every way, about how we
saw two very different shows. Theirs
was a much louder, in-your-face type
of experience and my buddy and I were
able to hear and enjoy the music while
also taking in the full spectrum of
the crazy cool light show that
accompanied their music.

Last week: 4-2 | Season: 11-7

Can’t pick just one, but some of my
favorites: Peter Gabriel at Earls
Court, London; Florence + The Machine,
Starlight; and any and all of my kids’
Richard’s Rock Camp performances at
The Granada.

Last week: 3-3 | Season: 11-7

Asleep At The Wheel.

Last week: 4-2 | Season: 11-7

AC/DC at Wrigley Field last week
(kidding, but that would’ve been
great, right?). I’m not a big
concertgoer but I’ve seen B.o.B.
twice. Real talented hip-hop artist
who has some nice electric guitar
skills.

Last week: 1-5 | Season: 8-10

I don’t know if I’ll ever see a better
live show than when the Watch The
Throne Tour came to Sprint Center a
few years back. It would be amazing to
watch Jay-Z live on his own or Kanye
West live doing his thing. This
concert had them both. Each performed
solo tracks and teamed up to do stuff
from their compilation album. Ball so
hard. If you were in or near Kansas
City that day and didn’t see that
show, you should regret it. Unless you
don’t like hip-hop. Then you’re
probably fine.
