Sometime between the tipoff and the end of the first half of Saturday’s KU men’s basketball game against Montana, Kansas Athletics will attempt to break the current Guinness World Record for something completely unrelated to basketball.
Ironically, the Kansas Athletics marketing staff hatched their plan to snag the Guinness World Record for “largest gathering of people wearing holiday sweaters” during a brainstorming session last summer, according to Associate Athletics Director Jim Marchiony.
“Summer is the time for planning, and this is really an example of that,” says Marchiony, who has been stationed this week at the Final Four in Omaha with the KU women’s volleyball team. “We thought it was something our fans would enjoy, which is really the No. 1 reason we’re doing this.”
The current record, according to Kansas Athletics, was set at Loughborough University in Loughborough, United Kingdom, where 1,175 people gathered in holiday sweaters on Dec. 10, 2014.
If you’d like to join in on the attempt Saturday, there are a few ground rules: A holiday sweater, to be clear, is defined by having long sleeves and at least one holiday-themed motif on it. That means reindeer, trees, snowmen, peppermint candies, lights, etc.
(Kansas Athletics is also selling specially designed KU basketball holiday sweaters for the occasion at Kansas Sampler.)
Those wearing their homemade or store-bought holiday sweater to the game will be asked to take an “official participation” ticket (completely unrelated to regular tickets, which are very much still a necessary component of attending games at Allen Fieldhouse) from a staff member upon entering.
At the 15:00-10:00 minute mark in the game’s first half, the world record attempt will take place. From there — hopefully, the numbers will be tabulated by the end of the game, Marchiony says — it’s a waiting game to hear back from the people at Guinness.
There’s no word yet on whether coach Bill Self plans to participate. As for Marchiony himself, he’s optimistic about the chances of not donning a goofy holiday sweater come Saturday.
“I’m hopeful that I’ll still be here in Omaha with the volleyball team for the championship game,” he says.
