Here are recent headlines about the military in Kansas:Fort Riley ¢ 1st Infantry Division(Manhattan Mercury) Two from post die in Baghdad: Two Fort Riley soldiers were killed in what were apparently separate attacks Wednesday in Baghdad. Military officials announced Saturday that Sgt. 1st Class Greg L. Sutton, 38, of Spring Lake, N.C., was killed Wednesday in an improvised explosive device attack. He was a fire support specialist assigned to the 212th Military Transition Team, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. He joined the Army in February 1991. This was his first deployment to Iraq, Fort Riley said. Pfc. Shawn D. Gajdos, 25, Grand Rapids, Mich., died of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by insurgents using improvised explosive devices and small arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.(Manhattan Mercury) Fort Riley’s “Dragon” brigade: BAGHDAD, Iraq – A 1st Infantry Division brigade combat team, which has been deployed since January, has teamed up with U.S and Iraqi forces in Baghdad, Iraq, to make progress fighting terrorists. As a part of Operation Dragon Fire, which began in early May, the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, or “Dragon” Brigade, has helped clear 45 neighborhoods, detain 94 suspected terrorists and cell leaders, disarm numerous explosives and weapons, destroy two torture houses and one safe haven for terrorists, and free two kidnapping victims. “We’ve established safe neighborhoods and safe markets,” said Col. Ricky Gibbs, Dragon Brigade commander, during a recent video teleconference with the Pentagon press corps. “We’ve improved the lives of the Iraqi people.”
