What is $52 worth?

As individuals begin to think about donating to the 2009 United Way Campaign in Douglas County, it helps to put things into perspective.

A gift of $52 will provide Unite Way agency clients with the following:

American Red Cross, Douglas County Chapter
One week of groceries for one person who has been displaced from their home in a disaster.

Ballard Community Services
Funding to keep one person’s electricity on for 30 days or one month of three meals a day for one child attending the Ballard Community Services Daycare/Preschool program.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Kansas, Douglas County Affiliate
Process background checks for two volunteers (KBI, DMV, and Child Abuse Registry).

Boy Scouts of America, Heart of America Council
The cost of one uniform and Handbook for a Cub Scout or Boy Scout.

Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence
Four months of quality after school programming for one student from a low-income family.

Douglas County AIDS Project
1000 condoms distributed free to promote safe sexual practices.

Douglas County CASA

Carelink Emergency Response installation and service for one month or the use of telemontoring equipment (blood pressure and weight), for one month.

Three sets of replacement clothing for a victim-survivor after a hospital exam.

Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri
Four months worth of program opportunities for one Girl Scout that helps her build courage, confidence and character with a lasting sense of responsibility and accountability to her community … local, national and global.

“Life Line” phone service offering five days of counseling–provided 200 or more times.

Health Care Access Clinic
Medication to treat an infection or five clinic visits with an appointment.

Housing and Credit Counseling
Ten free Tenant Handbooks with over 50 pages of information on Tenant rental subjects from application and security deposit to lease and maintenance questions.

Lawrence Community Shelter, Inc. (LCS)
Three round-trips to take a client to-and-from alcohol or drug detox, or rehabilitation in Topeka or Kansas City.

Meals on Wheels
A hot, nutritious meal delivered by a caring volunteer to one client for over a week, providing the client not only food but companionship and help in maintaining their independence, as well as peace of mind for them, their family and friends.

Success By 6 Coalition of Douglas County
Two hours of home visits by an early-childhood mental health professional specializing in parent bonding and infant attachment.

The Arc of Douglas County
Compensate for the support needed for one monthly meeting of the Self Advocates of Lawrence, an empowerment group of adults with developmental disabilities who get together to learn and practice the skills needed to take more control of their own lives and to advocate on issues that impact their lives.

The Salvation Army
One basketball scholarship for an underprivileged child to participate in the youth basketball league.

Trinity In-Home Care
Five hours or one month of in-home assistance to 35 percent of Trinity clients.
