Michelle charms Denver

_Paul Davis is one of three Lawrence delegates to the Democratic National Convention who will be blogging on LJWorld.com. Check back often to see what they’re saying.>_Michelle Obama has received a bad rap. Many conservatives twisted her comment about her national pride many months ago and tried to paint her as an angry, unpatriotic woman. I can still hear Sean Hannity questioning her patriotism nightly on FOX News (yes, I confess to watching FOX every once in a while). But Michelle Obama erased any fears that a reasonable person could have about her love of America and her passion for the issues about which her husband is campaigning. Michelle needed to show America last night that she is a product of the American dream and that her family is really just an ordinary American family. And I believe she hit a home run. This is an extraordinarily accomplished woman who lost her father to MS when she was a child and came from parents who never attended college. They clearly instilled her with good values and inspired her to work hard enough to be able to attend Harvard Law School. Like it or not, Americans want to know that their First Lady can relate to them. I think this was a significant problem for Teresa Heinz Kerry, who came across as somewhat elitist and out of touch with middle class Americans. Conservatives will have a hard time portraying Michelle Obama as someone out of touch with working class voters after her speech last night. The delegates really were touched by the appearance of Sen. Ted Kennedy. I don’t know if it was shown on television, but there was a wonderful video about the life and career of Ted Kennedy that was shown prior to Caroline Kennedy’s introduction of her uncle. The video really brought home the impact that Kennedy has had on this nation during his decades in the U.S. Senate. While Kennedy is often demonized by the Republicans as a symbol of liberalism, he clearly is loved by rank and file Democrats who want to think back to the days of Camelot. Everybody is buzzing about Hillary’s speech tonight and whether she will be lukewarm in her support for Obama or will make a strong statement urging her delegates to enthusiastically support Obama. It should be interesting. I’m hoping for and expecting the later.
