When it comes to the weather, how much social media is too much?

Weather Watch ...from the A.M.

Twitter is something I am still trying to fully grasp. I understand the concept, etiquette and how to post a tweet, but I’m still trying to figure out how to effectively use it. My main use of Twitter is for the weather; posting a short forecast to let followers know what the weather will be like. The biggest obstacle I run into is fitting the weather in 140 characters or less.

I’ve read in “twittetiquette” not to post more than five tweets in an hour or 10 in a day. I agree it can be frustrating when you log on to twitter and every post is from the same person. What about during severe weather? Is there an exception to too many tweets?

Typically our weather team (and our site’s main account) tweets weather watches, warning and advisories. When severe weather is going on we post storm reports; everything from severe hail, to severe winds, to tornadoes. We also try to upload weather pictures of the storms.

To all of the twitter users out there, what do you prefer? Do you want to know about all of the weather watches, warnings and advisories? What about storm reports, rain totals and snow totals?

Please let me know what you want and don’t want. When it comes to weather postings, what is the line where the tweets may become annoying, or is there no limit? Also, what do you like to see on a “normal” weather day. A forecast for just that day, more details or perhaps a link to the forecast on our weather site?
