Take a look at this morning’s fog from Lawrence and across the area
The fog was very dense this morning, but it wasn’t just dense in one location, most of Northeast Kansas was battling the fog.
We’ve mentioned in previous blogs, the best ingredients for fog are clear skies, calm winds and temperatures near the dewpoint. This morning, we not only had dense fog, but for some areas it was so cold, we also had freezing fog.
What is freezing fog? Simply put, it is fog that forms when the temperatures outside are below freezing. Freezing fog does not mean the water droplets in the air are actually frozen (although they can freeze and then we have ice fog). During an episode of freezing fog, the water droplets are cooled to temperatures below freezing and will freeze on contact with a surface. This is a great site that explains the difference between freezing fog and ice fog.
Here are some pictures from the fog this morning across the area.
We’ll begin in Lawrence. The fog was extremely dense this morning. The following two pictures show downtown Lawrence, however you cannot see the town. In this first picture you can barely see the outline of the buildings. All you can really see are the lights.
In this second image, you can see the headlights on passing cars if you look closely, that’s it!
Near Lawrence, the Basehor/Linwood area also had a foggy start to the day.
And here’s Manhattan. In this first picture, you can tell it’s foggy, but you can still see the Kansas State University Campus.
In this second picture of Manhattan, the fog is more dense. You can barely make out the buildings or the white car.
The fog was also dense this morning in Junction City. In this first picture, it is foggy, but you can still make out the cars and buildings.
In this second picture, it is hard to see anything but the lights.
Here is a picture of the fog this morning in Topeka. Notice how everything disappears in the distance.
Areas to the north and south had fog as well. This first picture shows the fog this morning in Mayetta.
This second picture shows the fog this morning in Emporia.
