A little Spring romance with Beach House
“Is it getting romantic yet, God d*$#it?”
The guitarist’s question was met with a round of applause at the Granada Tuesday night. Don’t worry, it really did feel a little bit romantic.
A few weeks ago I (along with many of you) tuned in to watch Conan O’Brien’s final show on NBC. And, like many across the country did, I also decided to watch Jimmy Fallon’s show right after Conan. That was the first time I heard Beach House. Yes, I’m tardy to the party with that one, but that’s when I fell in love.

I was also tardy to the party Tuesday night (forgive me, I just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl 11 days ago). They were set to play the Granada, and Bachelorette opened for them. But we only caught the end of her set, and now I regret not coming earlier.
The woman was just adorable, surrounded by her sea of laptops and gadgets. And she sounded fantastic, it was a treat for electronic music lovers. She reminded me of Goldfrapp, but less high pitched. You should definitely check her out.
It wasn’t long before Beach House took the stage in front of a packed audience at the Granada. The crowd was particularly drawn to the props in their set. To the untrained eye, it may look like tacky high school prom decor. But in reality, they were glittery spinning diamond pinatas of doom! And it’s no secret that I’m a sucker for all things glittery.
Here’s what they opened with:
If you were at the show Tuesday night, you probably felt the love. First of all, nobody got stinking drunk (as is the case at most shows) because it was a “school night.” People had to go to work the next morning. So if they drank, they only got a little happy buzz. Instead of smelling like beer and cigarettes, most of the audience smelled like coconut lotion, hairspray and fancy perfume.
The crowd at this show was just adorable. I get the feel that these are the types of kids who don’t like mainstream pop music, but don’t fit into the incredibly obscure music scene either. So when a band they finally like comes along, they’re just happy as a clam.

They even showered the band with gifts. Someone gave them a bouquet of flowers. Perhaps as a consolation prize to make up for the severe weather that slammed Lawrence just hours earlier? Either way, I was happy that our first night out without the baby was spent surrounded by such lovely people, watching quite possibly one of the loveliest of bands.
