Looking at the BCS through academics

While Kansas University’s football team awaits word on whether it will be invited to a BCS bowl, a national organization has reconfigured the BCS to take a look at academics. The verdict? It’s a good thing the real BCS is based on football play, because Kansas comes in at No. 17 in the academic BCS. The New America Foundation, which put the report together, has long produced a report on the 65-team field of March Madness, but this is its first foray into football.Kansas was lauded in one area. Todd Reesing’s finance and economics majors were cited as an example of how hard it is to use GPA and graduation rates to tell a complete story. For example, a team made up of 3.0 GPA engineering majors might be far more academically-oriented than a team of 3.5 GPA communications majors.Full explanation of the methodology behind the scores is available here.
