Do we need a secretary of the arts?

Should there be a federal secretary of the arts?Legendary music producer Quincy Jones thinks so. And in an online petition (as of this morning), he has more than 111,000 supporters.Jones made the comment back in November that the next time he talked with soon-to-be-president Barack Obama, he would “beg for a secretary of the arts.”Maria Butler, outreach coordinator at the Lawrence Public Library and chair of the local advocacy group the Arts Roundtable, is among the locals who have signed the petition.”With a new administration, we have an opportunity to refocus on arts and culture,” Butler says. “The current economic climate presents challenges but also makes programs that enrich and entertain us all the more important.”So what do you think? Do we need a secretary of the arts? If so, who would you nominate?
