Trees at root of spring exhibitions

Some of my favorite things to photograph — and, frankly, some of the things I love most about Lawrence — are the vibrant trees that line Old West Lawrence and the KU campus in the fall.A friend asked me to photograph some for his living room last year, and the hours I spent walking around, looking at trees, were a reminder of how peaceful and majestic they are.It seems like many artists are inspired by trees, whether as a specific subject matter of as a metaphor. An upcoming exhibit at the Lawrence Percolator will focus on just that.Called “Trees I Have Known,” the deadline to submit proposals for the show is Saturday. The exhibition will run from March 14 to May 3.The call for entries notes that artwork (both 2D and 3D) and ephemera will be accepted. Submissions must be sent to treesihaveknown@gmail.com with a brief description, price and contact information. For more information, visit the Lawrence Corporation for the Advancement of the Visual Arts Web site.Incidentally, this isn’t the only tree-centric exhibition scheduled in Lawrence this spring. Trees and Other Ramifications opens March 5 at the Spencer Museum of Art. That exhibit will include prints, drawings, books and photographs that offer “an open-ended look at some of the many ways that trees are meaningful to humanity and important in the natural world.”
