Cans for the Community collections to benefit Lawrence public schools

Cans for the Community has 12 can

Lawrence-based nonprofit Cans for the Community will be raising money to benefit the Lawrence school district next month.

Starting April 1, the organization will begin its 5,000-Pound Can Challenge, the goal of which is to collect 5,000 pounds — the equivalent of about 165,000 cans — of aluminum cans before the month’s end. The proceeds from the recycle of the cans will be donated to the district’s elementary schools, and organizers said they would like students to chip in too.

“We would like to encourage all students to make it their goal to recycle one or more pounds of cans during April,” said Linda Klinker, one of the nonprofit’s founders, adding that it takes 33 cans to make one pound.

Last year, all funds from the challenge went to the district’s six secondary schools, and each received $500, Klinker said. The challenge’s target of 5,000 pounds of cans is about double the amount normally collected on a monthly basis, but the goal has been reached the past two years, she said.
