Proposed Westar Energy plan would mean higher fees for Lawrence school district

A proposed Westar Energy rate plan would increase energy transmission charges for school districts by 29 percent.

That rate increase would amount to more than $37,000 per year for the Lawrence school district, according to Kathy Johnson, director of finance for the district.

Johnson explained via email that the transmission fee varies per meter and usage, but that she calculated the increase of $37,000 using transmission fee averages and the 2014-15 actual expenditures. Last school year, the school district spent more than $1.6 million on electricity and paid transmission fees of about $130,000, Johnson said.

In addition to the 29 percent increase on the transmission fee for school districts, the Westar Energy proposal would raise those charges for residential customers by 31 percent, according to The Associated Press. Meanwhile, the plan would cut some business rates.

Westar increased its general rates by about 4 percent in September. The Kansas Corporation Commission will vote on Westar’s most recent plan March 31, according to the AP.
