Disc golf course for kids in the works

Lawrence will soon have a disc golf course more fitting for kids and families.

The Quail Run Elementary School PTO raised funds to purchase the disc golf course for the school grounds, located at 1130 Inverness Drive. The course will be open to the public after school hours.

The course is going to include six holes with two tee locations, according to Maverick Disc Golf. Short tees average 150 feet and long tees average 200 feet and with “tougher lines.”

Marked the tee boxes and pin locations for Lawrence next disc golf course. It will be 6 holes with 2 tee locations. …

There are already two disc golf courses in Lawrence — at Centennial Park and Riverfront Park — but those both require some pretty long throws, especially for younger ones. Not to mention that at both those courses, beginner’s discs are apt to get lost in the woods or tall grass (or, if you’re really unlucky, the creek or river).

Maverick Disc Golf was at Quail Run to mark the tee boxes and pin locations on Friday, and the course should be complete and ready for play by May. I’ll check back in with them as that date gets closer to confirm the opening day.

Marking basket placements with Maverick at #Lawrenceks's new #discgolf course. 6 holes with two different boxes per hole. Should be fun! #discgolfforkids

Either way, it’ll definitely be an option for a summer activity to take up with the kids, perhaps with the more challenging courses as something to work up to.
