A Lawrence High School teacher has been named a Kansas Master Teacher.
Keri Lauxman, who teaches English at LHS, is one of seven members of the 2016 class of Kansas Master Teachers announced Wednesday.
The award is presented annually by Emporia State University “to teachers who have served the profession long and well and who also typify the outstanding qualities of earnest and conscientious teachers,” according to a news release. The Lawrence school district named Lauxman the Lawrence Master Teacher in December and nominated her for the statewide honor.
Each recipient will receive a $1,000 professional development stipend as part of the award, provided by Bank of America. Emporia State established the Kansas Master Teacher awards in 1953, and the program has been supported by Bank of America since 1980.
The recipients are selected by a committee that includes representatives from several groups: Kansas Association of Elementary School Principals, Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals, Kansas Parent Teacher Association, Kansas National Education Association, Kansas State Board of Education, Kappa Delta Pi Student Chapter and the 2015 Kansas Master Teacher class.
The six other recipients of the award are as follows:
