Lawrence High students meet presidential candidate Bernie Sanders
Students from the Lawrence High School Young Democrats club got to see the political process up close Wednesday.
Members of the club arrived early in the morning to ensure they’d be able to see Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Sanders gave a midday speech at Bartle Hall in Kansas City, Mo.
Attendees numbered several thousand for the speech, which focused on Sanders’ usual themes of economic inequality, according to the Kansas City Star.
Student clubs in the district are teacher-sponsored, but the club sponsor, LHS English teacher Jon Harrison, said though the trip came about because of the school club, it was entirely a student-organized effort.
After arriving early, the students stayed late, affording them a chance to get a photo with Sanders, who also signed the club’s sign, according to tweets from the school’s student newspaper. The newspaper, The Budget, also sent students to the rally.
The club took 15 students to the rally, according to club president Emma Posler. She said they left at 5:30 a.m. and waited outside all day in order to get front row seats.
